Ontario Breast Screening Program
Did you know women ages 40-74 can SELF-REFER for breast screenings?
Your risk for breast cancer increases as you age. In fact, approximately 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 45.
That’s why the OBSP (Ontario Breast Screening Program) recommends women ages 40-74 who are at average risk for breast cancer refer themselves for OHIP-covered screening mammograms every two years. Average risk for breast cancer includes:
- No acute breast symptoms.
- No personal history of breast cancer.
- Not had a mammogram within the past 11 months.
The OBSP also recommends an annual screening for women ages 30-69 who are confirmed by their doctor or nurse practitioner to be at high risk for breast cancer.

I got a text from WELL Health Diagnostic Centre last October to tell me that since I’m over 40, I can self-refer for a mammogram. I wouldn’t have thought about getting a mammogram otherwise since I didn’t notice anything wrong. I talked to my doctor about it and she agreed to my whim. Turns out I had stage 2 breast cancer. Your text saved my life. Thank you so much. I am doing the Run for the Cure tomorrow with my friends and my young son. They are also so grateful that I got a mammogram and immediate surgery. Your message is saving lives. I hope more people listen. – TERESA S.
Did you know we use Artificial Intelligence to detect breast cancer?
Early detection of breast cancer is important for better outcomes and treatment options. That’s why our diagnostic radiologists use SecondRead AI™ after their initial review to support their professional analysis of your screening (non-symptomatic) mammogram. This AI technology provides an additional examination of your mammography images, pixel by pixel, to determine any suspicious areas that may be too small for human eyes to identify.
