Diet & Nutrition Consultation

Nutrition is important for everyone, regardless of body size, weight or health status. A patient may see a diet and nutrition specialist to build an individualized approach and ongoing support for their nutrition and health-related needs. As well, these specialists can support people living with obesity who also have other chronic diseases, malnutrition, food insecurity or disordered patterns of eating.

Obesity is caused by complex factors, including the interaction of genetics, biological systems, and one’s environment. Obesity Canada recognizes obesity as a progressive chronic disease, similar to diabetes or high blood pressure, characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. In this way, diet and nutrition also play an important role in the prevention and management of cardiovascular health related issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke. Nutrition interventions for obesity management should focus on achieving health outcomes for chronic disease risk reduction and quality of life improvements, not just weight changes. It should emphasize individualized eating patterns, food quality and a healthy relationship with food.

Our team strives to develop change-based relationships with patients diagnosed with overweight or obesity by focusing on understanding the patient and the patient’s individual situation, uncovering the patient’s personal reasons for change, asking permission to provide recommendations and education based on individual needs, and empowering the patient throughout their health journey.
